4 Ways to Spruce Up a Hardworking Mudroom

Here in Charleston, SC, the mudroom is a transitional space between the outside and your home interior - a compact room where you can take off your coat and shoes or drop off keys and bags when coming home at the end of the day.

But given how the mudroom is the first space you see whenever you step inside, you might want to make a few upgrades to its aesthetics and functionality. Learn some design tips here.

  1. Invest in smart storage. The first step to enhancing the look of your mudroom is to keep it clean and organized. This means making sure all items, from shoes, boots and slippers to coats, backpacks and scarves, have their own neat, little place. You can go for sturdy cubby holes and cabinets, with nooks underneath for footwear and a closet for jackets and backpacks. A drawer for smaller items, such as dog leashes and keys, are also handy for those who have a more active lifestyle.

  2. Improve the space with a lovely floor. You won’t lack for options when it comes to excellent mudroom flooring. Take natural stone, for instance. This floor option is not only beautiful and versatile, but tough and low maintenance as well. If you want something more creative, porcelain tiles are available in diverse colors and patterns. They are also easy to clean and maintain.

  3. Personalize the space. There are many ways to do this. If you are a movie buff, for instance, why not frame posters of your favorite classic films and hang them on the mudroom wall? This can help create a focal point that clues guests in on your interests. If you’re aiming for a warmer and friendlier vibe, you should put up some of your kids’ choice artwork instead. And, if you love nature, keeping a shelf of small indoor plants can make a nice difference in the space.

  4. Consider including a seating area. You’ll need a place to sit so you can safely and efficiently put on or take off your shoes or boots. Bench seats are the ideal option not only because they are comfortable, but because they usually come with small storage underneath. Just lift up the top to reveal an extra space where you can store out-of-season gear.
